Tooth decay experiment

Class 3 have developed their learning about our bodies by looking at the role our teeth play within the digestive system. The children are able to explain how the enamel from our teeth is very similar to the outside of an egg, both needing calcium to be strong and healthy. In pairs, the children devised their own experiment through scientific enquiry to find out which liquid is most damaging for our teeth. Children were able to use their prior knowledge of acids and alkalis to make good predictions prior to starting the experiment.

Once they had decided on which liquids they were going to experiment with, the children were able to collect the materials they needed and keeping the variables the same to ensure their scientific enquiry is correct. After placing the egg or egg shells into different liquids, we had to store them for over a week for the reaction to happen.

A week later, the children looked at their experiment to find out the results. What they found was astonishing with vinegar making a hardboiled egg bouncy! Water and milk were the best liquids with vinegar and coke being the worst which would cause most damage to our teeth. All children finished the experiment by writing up a scientific report.

Take a look at our photos of the final eggs.

Thank you to Mrs Woolley from South Craven for taking the time to start our experiment with us and lending us the equipment we needed.
